Kentucky Green & Healthy Schools

Kentucky Green & Healthy Schools (KGHS) is a student-centered, project-based, and hands-on program that empowers students and faculty to improve the safety, health, and sustainability of their schools. The program is driven by student inquiry, and uses the entire school building and its grounds as a learning laboratory.

There are nine categories for school health and sustainability improvement projects within the KGHS program. KGHS categories include:

  • Energy
  • Green Spaces
  • Hazardous Chemicals
  • Health & Safety
  • Indoor Air Quality
  • Instructional Leadership
  • Solid Waste
  • Transportation
  • Water Quality

KGHS is a joint program of KEEC and the Kentucky Department of Education.  KGHS participation provides students with memorable and relatable lessons in all subject areas, resulting in measurable school improvement.  All grade levels are eligible to join. Every spring, high-achieving schools and students in the program are recognized at a statewide Summit. Currently, over 260 Kentucky schools in more than 70 counties are enrolled in the program.
